So it's been ages since I last updated. What can I say, I'm lazy. And busy! So, a numbered update it is!

1. I just secured a new job! A well-paying one with ace benefits at that! And I start next week! Go team! \o/

2. Esteban (my old latop) is dead. Let's take a moment to mourn his passing...
Alright. That's enough of that. I have a new laptop and it's made of awesome! Thus far, however, it remains unnamed. Any suggestions?

3. I may have accidentally converted my best friends into Trekkies? Like card-carrying, completely obsessive trekkies. You see I'm a bit in love with ST XI and insisted they watch it, which they did. And then I recommended they read a few awesome Kirk/Spock reboot fics, which they did. And now they're marathoning all the old episodes and insisting I come watch The Shat's buffoonery with them. Oops.

4. OMG, SUPERNATURAL HAS EATEN MY LIFE. I don't even know what happened. A few months ago, I didn't give a shit. Now I curse the CW for forcing me through yet another hiatus, can't seem to get enough Dean/Cas fic, and feel the overwhelming urge to buy this T-shirt (in girl's lemon yellow) just because the silhouetted figure kinda, sorta resembles Castiel:

I mean, just look at that BAMF. *stares adoringly*

... um, what was I talking about?

I just threw together a small rec list for a post on idolmeta so I thought I'd bring it over here for the benefit of my f-list too. I highly recommend every single one of these fics. I don't care if you're not a member of the fandom; if you're familiar with the material at all, you won't be disappointed :)

Star Trek XI

So Wise We Grow by captanddeaster (Kirk/Spock)
One of the best kid!fics I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Kirk and Spock assume joint parentage of an orphan after the demise of Vulcan.

“Commander Spock, we have located your son,” the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. “If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week.”

Merlin

Doubled over with the Hunger of Lions by nightanddaze (Arthur/Merlin)
A magical wind blows through Camelot raising havoc and destruction. When most people write sex-pollen fic, it ends up as crack or PWP but this is neither. The angst and pining in this story is simply gorgeous.

The first thing Arthur says after – the only thing he says—is, “This will never happen again, right?”

No, Merlin wants to say, watching the late spring sun glint off Arthur’s exposed collar bones and his hair.

Arthur is looking anywhere where Merlin is not. His eyes linger over the shivering yellow-green of the trees and the dirt they’ve scuffled through. He takes exquisite care to brush the moss off his breeches before his face hardens and he meets Merlin’s eyes.

I want to do it again right now, Merlin wants to say, watching Arthur’s shaky hands.

Supernatural

Anything Worth Dying For by waldorph (Dean/Castiel)
Writen before the start of the 5th season and therefore very much AU now, but probably of the best SPN fics I've read. This is a story about the apocalyse and Dean Wincester, the Messiah, written from the perspectives of all those who aid him - most notably Chuck as he documents events in his gospel. Absolutley one of the most well-developed fics I've read of this genre.

"It was still a mess, and half of the entire population of the Earth was gone. There was mourning, and people to grieve. But it did happen that the world was made new again; decimation and rubble vanishing, the hole in the ozone repaired, global warming reversed. It was as though God figured that after the Apocalypse, humanity would have enough to deal with. And yet the urge to write has not left my hand, years later. I am compelled to tell the story, which is all right. My job was easy, comparatively."
-- The Book of Chuck

I'M NOT CUTTING THIS. MY MISERY DEMANDS COMPANY. IF YOU'RE TOO COOL FOR THIS PARTY, YOU KNOW HOW TO SCROLL.

1. Esteban, my laptop, is having issues yet again.

The new power cord I was received after taking him in for repairs broke. It was barely a couple months old! The thing is so poorly made I'm disgusted. The metal prong that connects to the computer was housed in rubbery plastic that stretched out until nothing was supporting it and it snapped off. WTAF. Now I have to use my old-old cord that has too high a voltage for my computer (15-25v instead of 5-15v) and overloads it if I have it plugged in while I'm using it (at least until I get it sorted). /o\

2. FUCK YOU, CHAPTERS AND/OR INDIGO (WHATEVER YOU CALL YOURSELF THESE DAYS).

For you non-Canadians on my f-list, Chapters (and/or Indigo, I think there was a buyout involved) is pretty much the Canadian equivalent of Borders - i.e. a major bookstore chain. I ordered a few books from their website in September including Good Omens by Neil Gaimen and Terry Prachett. On a whim, I decided to go with the version with a pretty, more grown-up cover that was being released in early October; I mean, I <s>am vain</s> figured that I had plenty of other stuff to read in the mean time and a month wasn't too long to wait for a book that didn't look like the cover of a d-list horror film.

But it was supposed to ship two weeks ago and when I went on their site to find out why I hadn't got it yet, I noticed it hadn't even been shipped yet. Apparently the release date for the pretty new version of Good Omens has been changed to March 2010. March and no one even bothered to tell me! HOW HARD IS IT TO SEND OUT A GODDAMN MASS EMAIL?

They honestly couldn't expect that everyone who pre-ordered would be hunky-dory with waiting an extra 5 WHOLE MONTHS for a book that is already released in other covers, could they? Goddamn. I am seriously unimpressed.

3. AND WHY ISN'T GLEE ON TONIGHT?

I was looking forward to it. I'd even tried to avoid the spoilers and everything ;;

Fuck you, World Series. No one gives a shit about your crappy baseball (except for you, Mel, lol).
Favourite Fives: Female-Fronted Bands

Ugh, I hate the flu. I hate having the flu. I hate being cooped up at home, bored out of my mind because I have the flu. Especially while my mother is running all about squawking over how much needs to be done to perpare for Thanksgiving (which is being hosted at my place this weekend. Oh joy, oh bliss). But I suppose I should be grateful that it's probably not that swine flu tosh or anything more dangerous. Or at least I don't think it is. I should probably go to the doctor, shouldn't I? Blarg.

Anyhow, I’ve realized that I do better with writing when things have a definite structure. So in an attempt to compel myself to blog more, I’ve decided to start a new series: Favourite Fives. I’ll probably end up posting these once a week – I’m thinking Fridays? – but I figure why not strike while the iron is hot? So here you are.

Five Favourite Female-fronted Bands

1.	Metric
This has to be my current favourite home-grown band. Emily Haines has just the most beautiful, versatile voice and is one charismatic show-woman. Seriously, if you can see this band live, you should snap up the opportunity. These Canadians really know how to keep a crowd dancing from the first note to the last.
Listen: Help I’m Alive , Monster Hospital, Dead Disco

2.	The Bird and The Bee
So I hear that Adam Lambert might be working with Greg Kurstin, which is ridiculously exciting because the band he formed with Inara George is probably one of my favourites. (FYI, Greg has also written for Lily Allen, Britney Spears and Little Boots.) Also, if You’re a Cold wasn't written about Ryan Ross, it's a damn shame because it absolutely should have been.
Listen: Fucking Boyfriend , Again and Again, You’re A Cold

3.	Rilo Kiley
Jenny Lewis has the most gorgeous voice I’ve ever heard. You might recognize it for the back up vocals she did on The Postal Service’s LP. If you want to play 6 degrees of separation, she connects to bandom through her mentees The Like, with whom Ryan Ross took those infamous coke pics. The music of Rilo Kiley is pretty diverse, ranging from their early indie-folk-country to later work that nearly sounds R&B influenced.
Listen: Silver Lining, 15, Portions for Foxes

4.	The Ting Tings
This British band has hip, fun songs that are perfect for partying. You’ve probably heard their single That’s Not My Name on the radio, though I don’t think they’ve experienced quite the success in North America that they’ve had in the UK. Their album, We Started Nothing charted at #1.
Listen: We Walk, That’s Not My Name, Shut Up and Let Me Go

5.	Cassette Kids
I was turned onto this Aussie band by our own lovely flash_indie. They’ve toured with some relatively big names – Lily Allen, The Fratellis, and Ben Lee among them – but are still rather unknown in the Northern Hemisphere. Let’s change that, yeah?
Listen: You Take It, Forwards Backwards, Acrobat

Feel free to rec me your favourite female-fronted outfits.
So I have no life. Ergo, I watch far too much TV. This is a week in review! (May contain spoilers)

Gossip Girl S03 E02 - The Freshmen

This episode was kind of a lame duck, as far as I'm concerned. I actually like the premise of Dan being the popular one now and Blair having to claw her way up the rungs of the social latter but the execution of it really fell flat with me. Perhaps part of it was due to the machinations of Georgina - a character I've never liked even as a villian. I don't understand her motivations or why she appears to have absolutely no redeeming qualities. Tis bizarre.

I really love the Blair/Chuck moment at the end, though! They are absolutely OTP for me, to the point where I tuned out toward the end of last season because they just couldn't seem to get it together and all of their pointless drama just got to me. However their comforting snuggles after a hard day? Bless my poor little heart! Adorable!

Glee S01 E04 - Preggers

How awesome is this show? I CAN'T EVEN DESCRIBE. Football players dancing to Single Ladies on the field? Forget how many infractions that would cause, it was pure and unadulterated awesome.

I loved pretty much everything about this episode. The Cheerleading Coach's spot on the local TV news. Kurt's gutwrenching confession and his father's honest but loving response. The fact that both Finn and Puck wanted to do right by Quinn and the baby. (The fact that Finn is so gullible and naive that he actually bought the hot tub story!) Even Rachel's hissy fit. (I love it when a character has big, gaping flaws that help to define who they are. It doesn't make her unlovable, it's just makes her less than perfect.)

I really like that this show has chosen to start by painting their characters with such broad, stereotypical strokes and then slowly begin to define them with finer brushes into fully-rendered, three dimensional human beings. At least that seems to be the way it's heading. I mean, for all it's silliness, that part is true to life. We don't see people with much nuance when we first meet them. We make sprawling assumptions we often need to be disabused of as we get to know them better. This is pretty much perfect.

I might be the only person who likes Will's wife's fake pregnancy at the moment, but I think it's a curious story line and I'm intrigued to know how it will play out. Staying tuned, for sure!

Modern Family S01 E01 - Pilot

I received an email a few weeks ago inviting me to preview this show but never bothered because it looked like just another of those stupid stereotypical sitcoms (of which there have been too many and none of which I've ever liked). But some extremely glowing reviews by critics I trust caused to give it another look and I am impressed!

It basically follows three families that could be stereotypes except that somehow the writing manages to turn things on their heads. It's similar to The Office in that it's a mockumentary with cut-away scenes to characters explaining their behavior (often to much hilarity). I fear you might have to actually watch the 1/2 hour show yourself to really understand what I'm talking about but absolutely I recommend that you do!

Supernatural S05 E03 - Free To Be You And Me

A warning: I just starting watching Supernatural this season at the behest of my BFF who loves the show like no other. I haven't gone back at watched the previous seasons and am still not sure if I will. If I do, it'll probably only be the last one. I don't exactly care for the demon hunting element. What I do enjoy immensely is the heaven vs hell / interfering, malevolent angels aspect.

I really liked Dean and Castiel's interaction in this episode, but also Sam's angst and the pretty blond recovering alcoholic who tried to coax the truth out of him. Of course, the best part was definitely finding out at the end that Dean is Lucifer's true vessel or whatever. You know this makes a Dean vs. Sam / Michael vs. Lucifer show down at the end absolutely, positively unavoidable, right? The writers wouldn't set up that kind of perfect scenario only to forgo it. Definitely tuning in again next week :)

Merlin S02 E02 - The Once and Future Queen.

Oh, Merlin, how I've missed thee! Last week's episode had me completely re-immersed in the fandom and all of it's kick-assery (check my delicious for some great new recs!). I love this stupid show like whoa.

Unfortunately no, this week's episode title sadly does not refer to Arthur but rather the lovely Guinevere. Yes, my friends, we have at last arrived at the inevitable Gwen/Arthur portion of the show. Can't say I was really looking forward to it - if you watch this show and are not a huge Arthur/Merlin shipper, idek what's wrong with you - but I honestly must admit it was rather well done. I do think it would be hard for even the pairing's most ardent supporters to deny that their relationship progressed a bit too fast - from first real pangs of attraction to kiss to we can never be all in one episode - but the actors made it as believable as they could given the shitty pacing. The kiss scene itself was ridiculously pretty and by the end my heart did ache a little for their parting. (Don't worry, Gwen. Yes, things will change once he's king and you two can be together! Also, you will cheat on him and run off with his mate. Oops.)

Arthur and Merlin's relationship, however, remains a point of frustration. It's seemingly taken about four giant and confusing leaps backward - steps which the writers have failed to justify (like, at all). I fear they have to correct this and quick or they might lose people. (My BFF actually complained last week about how the regression of their relationship was putting her off.)

I loved Merlin blowing up at Gaius over how much he does for everyone and how little respect/recognition he gets for it. Merlin is more benevolent and patient than most, but I imagine putting up with that much bullshit gets old eventually. I'm thinking that this might actually be the reason for the writers emphasizing Arthur's pratliness in the past couple episodes - they're setting the stage for a big blow-out moment between the two of them. It's an interesting prospect and at least it would give a reason (if not an excuse) for Arthur's behavior.

Really, Arthur's behavior just in general has been kind of strange. I guess in this episode it can be chalked up to him wanting to impress Gwen, but it honestly seemed like he took absolutely none of what she said to heart except for in the last 5 minutes of the show. And while Arthur can be extremely prideful, he's never come off as a lying, apathetic a-hole. It all just seemed slightly OOC to the Arthur they were building toward the end of the last season. Idek *shrugs*

Anyhow, next week's episode looks good. So I'm crossing my fingers.

P.S. I love how everyone's breaking out their relevant fandom icons for this post. You guys are awesome <3

Last night was the end of Adam Lambert's donorschoose.org charity competition. AND WE WON! ontd_ai raised over $80,000 in the span of one month! I couldn't be more proud of us! I probably gave a lot more than I should've considering I'm supposed to be saving right now, but I can't think of a better way I could've spent the money.

Which reminds me of something else. I don't think I ever ended up doing a concert report about my experience at American Idols Live, so you guys might not know this, but I actually met Kris Allen. It wasn't anything fancy. My friend and I had arrived early so we could go get something to eat at a restaurant down the street and when we passed the venue I noticed a small crowd by the barricades and a figure in sunglasses and a grey beenie. I dragged us over and two minutes later I had a few photographs and Kris Allen's signature.

After the fact, I couldn't really understand what had compelled me to do it. I guess because he was right there and it seemed the thing to do. I'm not really the sort that collects signatures or memorabilia; it just doesn't mean anything to me, especially if I don't absolutely adore the artist. (I still have the drumstick from a Dresden Dolls show hanging out in the back of my closet somewhere which I regret not giving to a DD superfan when she asked. I know she would've cherished it.)

Anyhow, I remembered this autograph in the 11th hour last night and offered it up in exchange for a donation to charity. It went for $50! I'm still kind of giddy about it. I mean, here was something I got on a whim that meant virtually nothing to me and would've sat in the back of my closet forever and instead it'll now make some Kris Allen fan ridiculously happy and some underprivileged kids will have $50 more worth of shiny new equipment to help them learn.

The universe is kind of awesome sometimes, don't you think?

P.S. Did anyone ever end up taking advantage of my offer to finish a WIP for whomever donated the most money for this charity challenge? If so, now is the time to speak up or forever hold your peace!

Hey, guys! So I made a grevous error in my last post. They're both still super cheap (one hasn't even been bid on yet). There's one 2000+ word fic and 5 drabbles on offer, and I will write them in whichever of my fandoms you want if that helps (ie. Panic! At The Disco, American Idol, and Merlin).

Don't worry if you don't get paid until next week, as long as payment is submitted by Monday Sept 14th, we're all good. There's a FAQ here if you have any further questions :)

The other offer I made in my last post (that I will finish a WIP for the person on my f-list who donates the largest dollar figure) is still open until the challenge closes on the 20th.

So I've been shitty about updating recently but since when is that new? Things are busy at work gearing up for the new school year and I'm busy trying to participate in all of my current fandoms which is continuing to be a nightmare, lol.

(I'm still trying to whittle it down to one. My natural mono-fannishness compels it! So far I managed to mostly cut out Star Trek which, while completely awesome, was way too overwhelming to participate in casually and far too intimidating to really sink my teeth into. I'm down to Bandom, Merlin & American Idol.)

OOH, speaking of American Idol and fic, I'm participating in fic auction for charity!

The Charity:

Adam Lambert is working with donorschoose.org to raise money for arts programs in underprivileged public schools. In a complete stroke of genius he's pitted his various fangroups against each other in a competition to raise as much as they can. ontd_ai has been kicking major ass but, honestly, it's such a great cause that winning isn't even what's important. It's funding as many of these projects as possible and helping as many kids as we can.

I've already donated $400 of my own hard-earned money because, well, I was so lucky to have access to brilliant arts programs that helped shape the person I am today and kids everywhere deserve those same opportunities. It's a lot of money for me, but I've been really good about saving this summer and this is a better splurge than a designer handbag. But don't let the dollar value of my donation, discourage you! Every dollar helps.

So far ontd_ai has been able to raise over $27,000 dollars and Adam's fans have raised over $85,000 in total!

My Fic Offers:

I have two! One 2000+ word fic and 5 drabbles. You bid for the right to have me write your prompt. Please bid, guys! Even if you're not really into AI, it's for a great cause and I'm really excited to be writing again! All you have to do is click on one of those links and reply to the thread with what you're willing to bid. When the auction closes, you donate the amount bid only for the offers you've won.

If you'd like to donate but aren't interested in the auction, here is our Giving Page!

Both the auction and charity challenge run until Sept. 20th!

P.S. Okay. *Takes a deep breath* I'm really going to step up to the plate here.

For whoever donates the most money to this charity and posts the screencap, I will finish whichever of of the following exisiting WIPs the biggest donor chooses.

This is not an auction. This is you donating with no guarantees and me rewarding whoever has the biggest heart and deepest pockets. I will have this fic done for you by Christmas at the very fucking latest or I will kill myself trying. That is a promise.

1. College AU - In which Ryan virtually has split personalities - slutty partier by night and studious lit student by day - and Brendon is a slacker who partners up with him for an important project and tries to figure him out.

2. The Christmas exchange fic I never finished in which Brendon and Ryan have sex in an airport bathroom.

3. A somewhat AU high school era fic in which, after Ryan finds out Brendon might be moving Salt Lake City, they end up sleeping together. And then again. And then again. Ryan is emotionally retarded and Brendon is just confused (but elated!)

4. A Brendon/Spencer (yes, you fucking read that right) fic set in the Napa Valley where the two of them raise Ryan and Keltie's orphaned daughter. (Based on a Death Cab song, so you know it won't suck, lol)

5. Samson: an AU in which Ryan has a run-in with a gypsy who casts a spell on him ensuring he will be successful so long as he doesn't cut his hair. Brendon is a hairdresser. They fall in love.

6. The epic Transsexual AU. Doesn't even require an explanation at this point, lol. (I've actually written a few thousand words more of this since I last posted about it! \o/)

7. A gritty AU in which Brendon and Ryan meet in a club and have hot, dirty sex. (This is porn, guys. Pure and unadulterated porn.)

Happy donating!

Guys. Guys. Why do I have fucking tears in my eyes? When did I become such an absolutely ridiculous individual? I normally make fun of people who get all emotional over these bands but Christ... I really do care about this ridiculous band don't I?

This makes me so fucking happy it hurts

Seriously, thank you Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith. Thank you so fucking much for finally going back to making the kind of music I love. I didn't really realize how much I had missed caring the actual music until I heard this new song.

Just... <3

ETA: patd is kinda fucked. We're so divided that the community is basically going to implode. Half of the people are fans of Fever era Panic and half loved Pretty. Odd, and we're basically just going to bicker and fight over which incarnation of the band and which of the two sides now that they've split is better.

I can't even fault people for shit talking this because I know I'll be doing the same when we get our first taste of Jon & Ryan's project (not because I hate them but because I don't like their genre of music). Half of what's being said is ridiculous, though, and makes me question how well they know this band at all. Seriously? People think Pete wrote the lyrics? People think Brendon and Spencer left Ryan and Jon because they wanted to be ~famous~ again? Okay, there.

Kris and Adam make their first big purchase together as a (married or partnered) couple: the house of their dreams.

The house is unlike anything Kris ever expected he would buy. It almost looks like a castle on the exterior, limestone turrets spiralling skyward from either end and an elaborate portico clad in white Italian marble. Inside, however, it looks and feels like Willy Wonka might have lived here once upon a time. Every room seems to be painted in a different colour: brights, pastels, faux finishes and murals. A zebra-striped room Kris thinks may have once been a salon. Every room is floored with a new material, each more rare and exotic than the last, and bejewelled with gravity-defying light fixtures that make him want to stare until he’s either figured them out or gone entirely blind.

The house, it reminds him of Adam.

Adam, however, is not quite as certain when Kris takes him along on the second viewing.

“Don’t you think it’s all a little… much?” he asks, wandering down a corridor paved with milled copper and running his fingers along the hand-worked plaster walls.

Kris shrugs. It is a bit much. It’s a lot much; every room overpowers his senses in a way that makes his breath catch in his throat. But isn’t that the point? “I like it,” Kris says simply. “It makes me feel like… It makes me feel.”

Adam looks at him with affectionate eyes and smiles. “Well, that decides it then, doesn’t it?” He reaches over to clasp Kris’s hand, the left one where Kris wears his ring. Adam’s ring.

“What do you say we take the master bedroom for a test drive?” he suggests, running his fingers delicately across Kris’s palm in a way that always makes him shiver.

Kris laughs and allows himself to be pulled in any direction Adam wants to go.

Adam/Kris | PG | 407 words
Prompt: future fic, established relationship, making dinner.

It’s the world’s worst kept secret: Kris Allen is a genius in the kitchen.

A dinner party invitation to the Allen-Lambert household is perhaps one of the most coveted in all of Beverly Hills. Adam always makes sure that the table is immaculately set, that their guests’ glasses are topped up before they even run dry, and that the conversation never, ever falters; but it is his husband’s culinary wizardry that has everyone clamouring to their door and Adam could never begrudge them that. He doesn’t mind blending into the scenery just a little if it means that Kris stands out. Since they day they met, he never has.

Adam missed the memo, though, if Kris had planned to hold another of their famous fetes tonight. He shrugs off his jacket and forty pounds of luggage in the foyer on the floor, inhaling deeply and wanting to be nowhere other than in Kris’s arms. Two months is too long to go without them.

He finds Kris in the kitchen, the delicious scents that had accosted Adam’s senses the moment he walked into the house wafting from the pot Kris is hunched over on the stove.

“That smells like heaven,” Adam sighs.

Kris startles at the unexpected sound and nearly drops his wooden spoon. “You’re home early,” he says, turning and reaching out a hand. Adam takes it and pulls Kris in for a kiss.

“I took an earlier flight,” he explains. “I missed you.”

Kris rolls his eyes but gives himself over easily when Adam tips him back and kisses him again.

“Are we having company?” Adam asks, finally releasing his husband and lifting the lid of the pot on the stove. Some sort of gumbo, he thinks. Kris had been talking about a Cajun recipe book he’d bought when they’d spoken last night.

Kris shakes his head. “No, I just… Airplane food sucks.”

“And you wanted me to have something good and hearty when I got home, is that it?” Adam teases. “You were going to have it all set out on the table with candles and everything, I bet. Like some sort of domestic goddess.”

Kris scoffs. “I was going to have me all set out on the table with candles and everything. I just figured we’d work up an appetite.”

Adam gazes at him adoringly. “Man after my own heart, I swear,” he declares and reaches over to turn down the dial on stove.

HI! Gosh, it's been far too long since I've made a post. My apologies for that. I fail at posting regularly in the best of circumstances.

1. Esteban is still out of commission. I may or may not have mentioned that my laptop has been shutting down on me in my last update. Well, I finally managed to locate my warranty papers and take him in to be fixed but who the hell knows how long that could take. Until them I am relegated to the family computer, A.K.A. The Beast. It's positively ancient, has like 20 GB of harddrive, and probably less memory than your cell phone. /o\

My life, you guys. It is so hard.

2. I think I'm officially done with bandom? Maybe? Idk. All I know is that I seem to have lost interest in our boys. Even the big bang fics can't seem to refocus my attentions. I keep bookmarking them for future reference but I've probably only actually read about two. Even if I'm mostly done with panic, I still love all of you and this fandom will always be dear to me. Fear not.

Also, because I've not yet located a new fandom home all of my writing & plot bunnies still seem to be bandom based. I'm still working on a couple of my fics so with any luck I may have a few parting gifts for you guys <3

3. I feel like I'm going insane. It's a brand of schizophrenia I believe most of you refer to as poly-fannishness? How do you guys even do it? I feel like I'm being pulled in so many directions at once I might just come apart, lol.

You see, I'm as mono-fannish as they come. In bandom, not only was I mono-fandom but mono-band and practically mono-pairing! I'm used to being able to focus all my fannish energies on one point like a laser beam. Now I've got three new fandoms (plus my old one!) all jockeying for my attention and I just don't know how to deal.

American Idol:
Initially I figured that American Idol would be my new fandom home. I mean, I'm pretty much obsessed with Adam Lambert and having been since Hollywood Week. During the season I had to create a new category on my blog reader for all the American Idol media I was consuming and even still I was googling his name several times a day. ontd_ai has pretty much become my new internet home! I love those fierce benches like no other! And yet...

I just can't get into the fanfiction in general and Kradam in particular. Don't get me wrong, I like Kris well enough and find their bromance positively endearing. It just doesn't do anything for my lady parts. To be perfectly honest, I value the friendship between the straight-but-not-narrow christian and flaming-as-a-house-on-fire queen more than I could any romance. And Kris is a sweet boy but a terribly uninteresting character, as far as I can tell.

(Actually, neither of them have made for particularly interesting characters in the fic I've read thus far. I know they're shiny and awesome but that makes for really boring fiction, guys. Adam might be a "glittery alien from planet fierce" (his brother's words, not mine) but he must still have flaws.)

Anyhow, someone write me Adam/Zac Efron at Burning Man and try to change my mind, okay?

Star Trek:
Speaking of glitter and aliens, Star Trek anyone? Goddamn that movie was fabulous. As someone who had never seen a full episode of the original series (and still can't sit through that much Shatner without her eyes bleeding) and only a handful of Next Gen episodes, I found my own insistent desire to see the film bizarre at best. But something for whatever reason made me feel as though it was imperative that I see it as soon as possible and boy am I glad that I did! Now I've seen it twice and I probably wouldn't mind going back for a third helping!

Yes. It was honestly that awesome.

Let's put aside how hot Chris Pine is for a second and focus on what actually made this one of the best Action/Adventure films I've seen in a long time. The dialogue was witty, the film was impeccably well paced, the casting was brilliant, the acting was superb, the special effects were some of the best I've seen, and the plot was rich enough to actually drive the film instead of being a thin veneer to get us from Explosion A to Explosion B.

However much I adored the film, though, the fandom remains intimidating. Star Trek XI (or New!Star Trek, Star Trek 2009, Star Trek Reboot or whatever you want to call it) may have worked like a brilliant AU to create a fascinating and distinct universe in which to play but it doesn't erase or make completely irrelevant the breadth of canon from the rest of the franchise. Which is a lot of ground to cover for someone not actually particularly interested in the rest of the franchise.

Kirk/Spock is a pairing I can get behind, though. It makes sense that they are the original slash pairing and the ship from which so many of our tropes originate. They are brilliant together. Their characters interact so fascinatingly. They don't seem like the easiest couple to write, however, and I'm not having an easy time finding a great deal of awesome fic. I've read the few lauded fics based off the new canon but I need more.

Please feel free to leave me recs in the comments.

Merlin:
Merlin premieres in Canada and the States tomorrow! That means an already fabulous fandom is about to get an injection of new life. I've probably read more in this fandom than the other two combined. It's just full of brilliant authors and a universe that is at once both rich and underdeveloped leaving it joyously full of possibility. It's a perfect fandom for HP refugees such as my self who miss the lure of magic, complexities of politics, and grand adventures of that beloved series.

I'm not actually sure what it is that's prevented me from settling down there, though. Perhaps it's the lack of new, inspiring canon? Having grown accustomed to RPS where there is something new happening with your characters every day, it's a little strange going back to a fandom that experiences long stretches of stasis. I remember those in-between times being great for the development of epics but I haven't seen too much of that in Merlin for whatever reason.

Motherfuck that was long. I guess I need to update more frequently eh? Alright. I'm off to go read more fic. Fuck if I know about whom, though, lol.
