I just threw together a small rec list for a post on idolmeta so I thought I'd bring it over here for the benefit of my f-list too. I highly recommend every single one of these fics. I don't care if you're not a member of the fandom; if you're familiar with the material at all, you won't be disappointed :)




Star Trek XI

So Wise We Grow by captanddeaster (Kirk/Spock)
One of the best kid!fics I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Kirk and Spock assume joint parentage of an orphan after the demise of Vulcan.

“Commander Spock, we have located your son,” the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. “If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week.”

Merlin

Doubled over with the Hunger of Lions by nightanddaze (Arthur/Merlin)
A magical wind blows through Camelot raising havoc and destruction. When most people write sex-pollen fic, it ends up as crack or PWP but this is neither. The angst and pining in this story is simply gorgeous.

The first thing Arthur says after – the only thing he says—is, “This will never happen again, right?”

No, Merlin wants to say, watching the late spring sun glint off Arthur’s exposed collar bones and his hair.

Arthur is looking anywhere where Merlin is not. His eyes linger over the shivering yellow-green of the trees and the dirt they’ve scuffled through. He takes exquisite care to brush the moss off his breeches before his face hardens and he meets Merlin’s eyes.

I want to do it again right now, Merlin wants to say, watching Arthur’s shaky hands.

Supernatural

Anything Worth Dying For by waldorph (Dean/Castiel)
Writen before the start of the 5th season and therefore very much AU now, but probably of the best SPN fics I've read. This is a story about the apocalyse and Dean Wincester, the Messiah, written from the perspectives of all those who aid him - most notably Chuck as he documents events in his gospel. Absolutley one of the most well-developed fics I've read of this genre.

"It was still a mess, and half of the entire population of the Earth was gone. There was mourning, and people to grieve. But it did happen that the world was made new again; decimation and rubble vanishing, the hole in the ozone repaired, global warming reversed. It was as though God figured that after the Apocalypse, humanity would have enough to deal with. And yet the urge to write has not left my hand, years later. I am compelled to tell the story, which is all right. My job was easy, comparatively."

1. Esteban, my laptop, is having issues yet again.

The new power cord I was received after taking him in for repairs broke. It was barely a couple months old! The thing is so poorly made I'm disgusted. The metal prong that connects to the computer was housed in rubbery plastic that stretched out until nothing was supporting it and it snapped off. WTAF. Now I have to use my old-old cord that has too high a voltage for my computer (15-25v instead of 5-15v) and overloads it if I have it plugged in while I'm using it (at least until I get it sorted). /o\


2. FUCK YOU, CHAPTERS AND/OR INDIGO (WHATEVER YOU CALL YOURSELF THESE DAYS).

For you non-Canadians on my f-list, Chapters (and/or Indigo, I think there was a buyout involved) is pretty much the Canadian equivalent of Borders - i.e. a major bookstore chain. I ordered a few books from their website in September including Good Omens by Neil Gaimen and Terry Prachett. On a whim, I decided to go with the version with a pretty, more grown-up cover that was being released in early October; I mean, I am vain figured that I had plenty of other stuff to read in the mean time and a month wasn't too long to wait for a book that didn't look like the cover of a d-list horror film.

But it was supposed to ship two weeks ago and when I went on their site to find out why I hadn't got it yet, I noticed it hadn't even been shipped yet. Apparently the release date for the pretty new version of Good Omens has been changed to March 2010. March and no one even bothered to tell me! HOW HARD IS IT TO SEND OUT A GODDAMN MASS EMAIL?

They honestly couldn't expect that everyone who pre-ordered would be hunky-dory with waiting an extra 5 WHOLE MONTHS for a book that is already released in other covers, could they? Goddamn. I am seriously unimpressed.


3. AND WHY ISN'T GLEE ON TONIGHT?

I was looking forward to it. I'd even tried to avoid the spoilers and everything ;;

Fuck you, World Series. No one gives a shit about your crappy baseball (except for you, Mel, lol). I want singing, dancing, and socially awkward highschoolers getting slushies thrown in their faces. *pouts*



This day officially sucks.


P.S. I'd started work on my Transsexual!Ryan AU again and had hoped to have it done for rydenrevival but with my power-cord issues and general inability to write at even a snail's pace, I don't know if that'll happen after all ;;

Ugh, I hate the flu. I hate having the flu. I hate being cooped up at home, bored out of my mind because I have the flu. Especially while my mother is running all about squawking over how much needs to be done to perpare for Thanksgiving (which is being hosted at my place this weekend. Oh joy, oh bliss). But I suppose I should be grateful that it's probably not that swine flu tosh or anything more dangerous. Or at least I don't think it is. I should probably go to the doctor, shouldn't I? Blarg.


Anyhow, I’ve realized that I do better with writing when things have a definite structure. So in an attempt to compel myself to blog more, I’ve decided to start a new series: Favourite Fives. I’ll probably end up posting these once a week – I’m thinking Fridays? – but I figure why not strike while the iron is hot? So here you are.


Five Favourite Female-fronted Bands

1. Metric
This has to be my current favourite home-grown band. Emily Haines has just the most beautiful, versatile voice and is one charismatic show-woman. Seriously, if you can see this band live, you should snap up the opportunity. These Canadians really know how to keep a crowd dancing from the first note to the last.

2. The Bird and The Bee
So I hear that Adam Lambert might be working with Greg Kurstin, which is ridiculously exciting because the band he formed with Inara George is probably one of my favourites. (FYI, Greg has also written for Lily Allen, Britney Spears and Little Boots.) Also, if You’re a Cold wasn't written about Ryan Ross, it's a damn shame because it absolutely should have been.

3. Rilo Kiley
Jenny Lewis has the most gorgeous voice I’ve ever heard. You might recognize it for the back up vocals she did on The Postal Service’s LP. If you want to play 6 degrees of separation, she connects to bandom through her mentees The Like, with whom Ryan Ross took those infamous coke pics. The music of Rilo Kiley is pretty diverse, ranging from their early indie-folk-country to later work that nearly sounds R&B influenced.

4. The Ting Tings
This British band has hip, fun songs that are perfect for partying. You’ve probably heard their single That’s Not My Name on the radio, though I don’t think they’ve experienced quite the success in North America that they’ve had in the UK. Their album, We Started Nothing charted at #1.

5. Cassette Kids
I was turned onto this Aussie band by our own lovely flash_indie. They’ve toured with some relatively big names – Lily Allen, The Fratellis, and Ben Lee among them – but are still rather unknown in the Northern Hemisphere. Let’s change that, yeah?

Last night was the end of Adam Lambert's donorschoose.org charity competition. AND WE WON! ontd_ai raised over $80,000 in the span of one month! I couldn't be more proud of us! I probably gave a lot more than I should've considering I'm supposed to be saving right now, but I can't think of a better way I could've spent the money.

Which reminds me of something else. I don't think I ever ended up doing a concert report about my experience at American Idols Live, so you guys might not know this, but I actually met Kris Allen. It wasn't anything fancy. My friend and I had arrived early so we could go get something to eat at a restaurant down the street and when we passed the venue I noticed a small crowd by the barricades and a figure in sunglasses and a grey beenie. I dragged us over and two minutes later I had a few photographs and Kris Allen's signature.

After the fact, I couldn't really understand what had compelled me to do it. I guess because he was right there and it seemed the thing to do. I'm not really the sort that collects signatures or memorabilia; it just doesn't mean anything to me, especially if I don't absolutely adore the artist. (I still have the drumstick from a Dresden Dolls show hanging out in the back of my closet somewhere which I regret not giving to a DD superfan when she asked. I know she would've cherished it.)

Anyhow, I remembered this autograph in the 11th hour last night and offered it up in exchange for a donation to charity. It went for $50! I'm still kind of giddy about it. I mean, here was something I got on a whim that meant virtually nothing to me and would've sat in the back of my closet forever and instead it'll now make some Kris Allen fan ridiculously happy and some underprivileged kids will have $50 more worth of shiny new equipment to help them learn.

The universe is kind of awesome sometimes, don't you think?

Hey, guys! So I made a grevous error in my last post. I screwed up the end date for the fic auction I'm participating in.

So far I managed to mostly cut out Star Trek which, while completely awesome, was way too overwhelming to participate in casually and far too intimidating to really sink my teeth into. Adam Lambert is working with donorschoose.org to raise money for arts programs in underprivileged public schools. In a complete stroke of genius he's pitted his various fangroups against each other in a competition to raise as much as they can. ontd_ai has been kicking major ass but, honestly, it's such a great cause that winning isn't even what's important. It's funding as many of these projects as possible and helping as many kids as we can.

I've already donated $400 of my own hard-earned money because, well, I was so lucky to have access to brilliant arts programs that helped shape the person I am today and kids everywhere deserve those same opportunities. It's a lot of money for me, but I've been really good about saving this summer and this is a better splurge than a designer handbag. But don't let the dollar value of my donation, discourage you! Every dollar helps.

So far ontd_ai has been able to raise over $27,000 dollars and Adam's fans have raised over $85,000 in total!

ETA: patd is kinda fucked. We're so divided that the community is basically going to implode. Half of the people are fans of Fever era Panic and half loved Pretty. Odd, and we're basically just going to bicker and fight over which incarnation of the band and which of the two sides now that they've split is better.

I can't even fault people for shit talking this because I know I'll be doing the same when we get our first taste of Jon & Ryan's project (not because I hate them but because I don't like their genre of music). Half of what's being said is ridiculous, though, and makes me question how well they know this band at all. Seriously? People think Pete wrote the lyrics? People think Brendon and Spencer left Ryan and Jon because they wanted to be ~famous~ again? Okay, there.

Guys, I so called this ages ago. I doubted Panic would make it to a third album after Pretty. Odd.'s poor showing and lo' and behold...

To be honest, I'm not even really that upset. Now Ryan and Jon can make all the douchey, pretentious throw-back rock they want and Brendon can go on to make music that maybe doesn't suck. Ryden is no more but honestly, they haven't really even been friends for months so I don't see much of a difference there.
